The Renault Group, being the most successful in Morocco’s car market, confirms its persistence in the construction of a manufacturing complex in Tangiers to produce low-cost cars despite losing its ties with its former project partner Nissan Motor Co.

Last February, Nissan declared that it would suspend its involvement in the plant project alliance due to monetary obstacles caused by the financial crisis.

The former Nissan-Renault alliance, which was in partnership with the Moroccan government, said that its total investments of 600 million Euros would be involved in its manufacturing capacity.

According to Reuters, president and CEO of Renault and president of Nissan Carlos Ghosn flew from Paris to visit the construction site in Tangiers, and to meet King Mohammed along with high-ranked government officials in Rabat; he dismissed any suspicion regarding the plant’s progress.

In addition, Ghosn said that he had already given the green light on investment for plant apparatus. He stated that the construction will be due by early September but that the sole change would be in the factory’s production which, he adds, depends on the Moroccan market’s circumstances.

Ghosn said that in the future Nissan would take part in the project but it is for now focusing on a similar project in India.

According to Maghreb Arabe Presse (MAP), the plant is predicted to produce 170,000 vehicles a year; it will be expanded two years later to produce 400,000. The project will generate around 6,000 direct jobs and about 30,000 indirect ones. Furthermore, the factory will produce Renault’s low-cost Logan car, as well as two commercial vehicles, Dacia and Nissan, 90% of which are destined for export.

The project will result in bringing the North African country closer to its domestic goals where “the Moroccan government is set to bring the unemployment rate under 7% by 2012, Moroccan prime minister, Abbas El Fassi, said on Wednesday,” according to MAP.

It is reported that General Motors has filed documents in court in an attempt to get “New” Chrysler to honor its full pre-bankruptcy debt of $531,275 (of which Chrysler has so far only agreed to pay back about a third) for work on the sophisticated Two-Mode hybrid powertrain that was jointly developed by the two American automakers along with Daimler and BMW.

Chrysler and General Motors have both filed for Chapter 11 protection from creditors, which allows the automakers to renegotiate – or in many cases completely cancel – past contracts that are no longer desirable. It seems that Chrysler’s contract with The General, which is supplying the hybrid transmissions to Chrysler, has yet to be picked up by New Chrysler.

This case is a bit more intriguing than most – such as Chrysler’s canceled contract with Cummins for light-duty diesel engines for the Ram pickup – as it pits General Motors across the courtroom and on the other side of bankruptcy negotiations. We suspect that New Chrysler may be keen to pick up its old tab since the automaker is still planning to use the Two-Mode Hybrid technology for future vehicles, starting with the 2010 Dodge Ram, though possibly with more favorable terms.

Adding value to a successful design that’s been essentially unchanged for 30 years might seem like an unecessary fix, but Mercedes has seen fit to add a few interior updates to its G-Class for its 30th year on the road.

The updates include a new set of ‘ergonomically optimized’ front seats which ostensibly improve comfort while adding better lateral bolstering for off-road support. Also on the list is a new rear bench seat with more modern appointments, including styling intended to echo that of the front bucket seats.

The new interior is available in either black or gray cloth and black, gray or chestnut leather. High-spec designo leather in black or classic red is also available for order, as is piano lacquer black wood trim. Early in 2010, a Labrador blue designo stone trim will also be available.

A few tech updates made the grade as well, including a now-standard auxiliary jack for music input, and ambient lighting is now available for the interior as well. A media interface for iPod or other USB devices can also be purchased.

Finally, the outside gets a choice of ‘palladium silver metallic’ or ‘designo platinum magno’ finishes in addition to the standard colors previously on offer.

Ford’s new smaller commercial van, the Transit Connect, will begin arriving in dealers almost immediately, the automaker says. The Turkey-built van, which was initially designed for European users, is aimed at commercial users seeking something a little smaller and more efficient than traditional options available in North America.

The first Turkish-built Ford ever sold in North America, the Transit Connect will be available as either a cargo or passenger van with either glass side windows or steel privacy coverings.

Ford has invited Leftlane to preview the Transit Connect, so check back soon for our driving impressions of the new vehicle that the Michigan automaker hopes will reinvent the commercial industry.

DragonFire Racing, a leader in custom performance racing vehicles, accessories and custom racing, announced that its Kawasaki Teryx, driven by Reid Nordin of Team Green Kawasaki and co-driver Hans Waage, took first place in UTV class at the Baja 500, in Ensenada, Mexico. The first place finish was the first win ever for Kawasaki Teryx, in the Sportman UTV class of the Baja 500.
